Cybersecurity & AI: Career Pathways for ICT Students

Cybersecurity is one of the most in-demand career paths in tech right now — and you told us loud and clear.
Cybersecurity is one of the most in-demand pathways in tech right now — and you told us loud and clear.
Based on student experience surveys from last year’s events, cybersecurity was the most requested topic for 2026. In response, and as part of our commitment to supporting your professional development beyond the classroom, we’re excited to launch our first ICT Industry Talk of the year.
This session will share real-world insights into employability, industry expectations, and the growing role of artificial intelligence in cybersecurity and the wider tech sector.
Meet the Speaker: From Student to Sponsored Tech Professional
For this session, we’re welcoming Victor Demarchi, a Senior Systems Engineer at WiseTech Global (Sydney). Victor was once an international student, just like many of you, and has since built a successful career in the Australian tech industry — including securing employer sponsorship. He’ll be sharing his genuine journey, the challenges he faced, and the lessons he learned along the way.
“Hi everyone, I am Victor, and I am a Senior Systems Engineer at WiseTech Global, a technology enthusiast and lifelong Linux fan, the kind of person who enjoys breaking things just to understand how to fix them and hopefully make them more secure afterwards.
I work mainly with infrastructure, cloud platforms and cybersecurity, helping protect systems, data and people in environments that are getting more complex every year, especially now with artificial intelligence becoming part of everything we do.
Most of my time is spent building secure systems, fixing problems, improving performance and making sure things keep running when they are under pressure. I also love automating tasks, testing new ideas and asking simple but important questions like “what could go wrong here?”
When I am not protecting servers from bad decisions, including my own, I enjoy sharing what I learn, helping students start their careers and reminding everyone that curiosity, adaptability and continuous learning are the most important skills in tech today.
It will be a pleasure to share a bit of my ‘day-to-day’ life in a tech enterprise with you, and I am really excited to talk about careers in cybersecurity in the age of artificial intelligence.”
