World Environment Day Beach Clean-Up: A Day of Action and Inspiration

On the 5th June, we gathered for a truly meaningful beach clean-up event in celebration of World Environment Day. Organised in partnership with Clean Up Australia, this special morning brought together students, staff, and local volunteers with one shared purpose: to protect our beautiful coastline and reflect on our impact on the environment.

We kicked off the beach clean-up event with a relaxed brunch at Mindroom. As we enjoyed the spread, Yandressa Karine Rodrigues de Pinho, Environmental Engineer and guest speaker, shared her inspiring personal journey and introduced us to the Double Diamond technique – a powerful framework that can be applied to any kind of project. Her talk sparked reflection and brought the group into a thoughtful mindset as we prepared to head to the beach.

The Pearl Circle: Symbolism, Unity & Purpose

Once we arrived at the beach, the atmosphere shifted into something truly special. In our Pearl Circle, participants created symbolic bracelets, each bead representing an intention, a shared value, or a personal goal. It was a beautiful moment, filled with connection, love, and purpose. The circle was a reminder that even the smallest action, when done with intention, can ripple outwards and create real change.

The Power of Five Minutes

Then it was time for the beach clean-up action. Equipped with gloves, bags, and tools provided by Clean Up Australia, we began our beach clean-up. And within just five minutes, we were impressed by how much litter we had collected during the beach clean-up.

It was a powerful reminder of two things:

  1. How easy it is for rubbish to accumulate unnoticed
  2. How much of a difference we can make with just a small effort

Why It Matters

Our Mindroom family proudly took part in this Ubuntu clean-up as part of a statewide initiative to care for our environment and support our community. Thanks to volunteers across Queensland, including our own students and team, countless pieces of litter were removed from local environments.

For each participant, Carolyn Vincent’s Ubuntu Foundation donated $20 to Women’s Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ)—raising an incredible $34,400 to help provide free legal and support services to women and children experiencing domestic and family violence.

This initiative showed how simple acts—like picking up rubbish—can ripple outward to create real social and environmental impact.
